The fountains at Lake Pointe Woods in the News
"A Way With Words" presentations and luncheons will be underwritten and hosted by The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods, 3260 Lake Pointe Boulevard. Members of the public will be invited to make reservations to join residents of The Fountains at no cost.
“The partnership with The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods will further the mission of the Sarasota County Libraries to foster lifelong learning and inspire community engagement,” Kalajian notes. “It will do so not only by creating an avenue for the public to engage with prominent writers, but also by encouraging readers to discover new resources at their public library.”
“Everybody wins -- our residents and the public -- through this exciting community partnership,” said Ruedlinger.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Paige St. John of Sarasota Herald Tribune is slated to be the honored speaker at the first "A Way With Words" luncheon at The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods on October 24th at 11:30 am. St. John was recently awarded the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for distinguished investigative journalism.
St. John joined the Sarasota-Herald Tribune in 2008 as an investigative reporter. As a working journalist for more than three decades, she has covered Florida politics, the environment and natural disasters. October’s "A Way With Words" luncheon guests will learn how St. John uncovered the story that the Pulitzer Prize committee declared an “examination of weaknesses in the murky property-insurance system vital to Florida homeowners, providing handy data to assess insurer reliability and stirring regulatory action.”
Thrilled to have had the Baltimore Orioles back in Sarasota for their second season of spring training, 85 residents of The Inn at Lake Pointe Woods, the assisted-living community of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods, celebrated Major League Baseball opening day April 1 by donning a sea of orange and black caps and jerseys donated to the fans by Tracee L. Crump, Florida Operations assistant for the Orioles.
Even Roxy, the community's beloved pet, was involved in the festivities.
The Inn's Opening Day celebration also featured baseball trivia, memorabilia, hot dogs emulating styles served at various stadiums, popcorn, peanuts and ice cream, a Wii baseball tournament, a reading of "Casey at the Bat" and a screening of Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First."

Polly White, right, of Sarasota, parasailed for the first time today to celebrate her 91st birthday. She was also helping to raise funds for a children's charity.

Polly White has spent a lot of time in the skies during her 91 years. Today, she returned to the air, but this time without a plane.
The Sarasota resident went parasailing to celebrate her birthday and to raise money for Watermark for Kids, an organization that helps fund children's creative visions.
White, who received a Congressional Gold Medal in 2009 for her contributions as a Women Air Service Pilot during World War II, was asked to go for the ride by Shannon Ruedlinger, executive director of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods, the Sarasota retirement community where she resides.
She agreed to go - and pay for it personally – if the community could raise at least $500 for Watermark for Kids, an organization that helps fund children's creative visions.
The money was raised through T-shirt sales, a silent auction and a raffle.
Sarasota, Fla. – At exactly noon today, the color guard presented the flags as the bells tolled 12 times. Residents who gathered for the Flag Day celebration at The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods then recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and sang along as a hired entertainer played the national anthem.
The festivities took place on the patio overlooking the pool and lake at 3260 Lake Pointe Woods Blvd. Close to 100 residents donned red, white and blue for the occasion. A cookout followed and residents sang along as the entertainer sang a medley of patriotic melodies.
“Residents seemed genuinely touched,” said Kathy Hallock, Community Life Director.

Sarasota, Fla. – A new tie or a new rake may top the list of gifts many kids will give their fathers on June 20th. However, some very experienced Sarasota fathers are shifting the focus of the holiday to what lasting gifts fathers can pass on to future generations.
These seasoned dads wish to tell young fathers today: Always be kind, lead by example, give lots of love and encouragement, and never abandon your children, for example.
The fathers were interviewed at The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods, 3260 Lake Pointe Boulevard, as part of a nationwide project spearheaded by Watermark Retirement Communities. Having raised their own families a half century ago, their big-picture perspective brings clarity and credibility to their advice, making it a true gift this Father’s Day. More of their advice follows.

Ten Senior Women at The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods Offer Words of Wisdom
Sarasota, Fla., April 26, 2010 – Ten local moms with years and years of experience are among 150+ mothers nationwide who are speaking out in time for Mother’s Day. Even though they raised their own children decades ago, the sage advice of these moms is just as meaningful today as it was some sixty years ago. In between managing today’s hectic family schedules, working, carpooling, cooking PLUS diaper changes, young moms in 2010 can use all the advice they can get.
The collective advice ranges from tips on raising kids to advice for the moms’ personal lives. For example, Sarasota resident Lola Laubheim, who raised three daughters in Baltimore, Md., advises: “Set a good example and laugh a lot.”
Other local mothers’ advice includes:
“Read to your children every day. Have dinner with them every night with good conversations.” -Carol Hallinger, raised 3 children in New Rochelle, NY
“ Have reasonable discipline and encourage education.” -Marcella Rudick, raised 3 sons in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
“Take care of your children and know they will be leaving the nest and everyone should be prepared. Be there for them good, bad and indifferent.” -Estrella Clemendor, raised 2 daughters in New York City.

“Just enjoy the children as much as you can. They only stay young for a very short time.” -Dona Whitehouse, raised 4 children in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

Knittengales of Lake Pointe Woods Help Homeless All Year Round
Sarasota, Fla. – With the sun shining so brightly on Sarasota this spring, it’s hard to imagine the need for a woolen cap, but that’s not stopping the Knittengales of Lake Pointe Woods from producing hat after hat, week after week. Their destination: Hats for the Homeless, a charity based in New York City where hats are indeed in high demand.
It all started last summer when Lorraine Chimento, Human Resources Director for The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods, was knitting a scarf at lunchtime one day. Several residents asked her what she was doing.
“I told them I was knitting a scarf for charity,” Chimento said. “And that’s all they needed to hear. They loved the idea and wanted to help and word spread quickly.”
Chimento brought in yarn from home and provided needles and the Knittengales were born. They’ve met weekly ever since.
“Sitting and knitting with the residents allows me to really get to know them and learn about their history,” Chimento said. “We have a great time.”
And they do good work.
“Some of our residents really knit beautifully,” Chimento said.
By December, their hands had collectively completed a large group of scarves, hats and blankets. Chimento learned about Hats for the Homeless through a friend. They wrapped each item individually and sent them to New York to be distributed as holiday gifts.
“Our shipment was very much appreciated and it made us all feel good,” Chimento said.
The Knittengales meet every Tuesday at 2pm at The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods, 3260 Lake Pointe Boulevard.

Watermark Retirement Communities Reappointed as Manager for Fountains Portfolio
Watermark Retirement Communities, Inc., formerly Fountains Retirement Communities, has been reappointed as manager for 16 retirement communities previously managed by Sunrise Senior Living, announced David N. Barnes, President/CEO of Watermark Retirement Communities.
“Watermark was the obvious choice for managing the Fountains portfolio because we know the communities so well,” said Barnes.
After selling 18 properties within the Fountains brand to Sunrise in 2005, Fountains Retirement Communities was renamed Watermark Retirement Communities. Over the past four years, with his partner David Freshwater, former Fountains CEO, Barnes has grown Watermark’s management portfolio to 11 communities plus three home health agencies in six states. The addition of the Fountains portfolio brings Watermark’s total managed communities to 27 in 16 states.
“We very much look forward to the coming weeks and months as we personally welcome back so many former residents and associates into the family of Watermark communities. It feels like we’re putting the band back together,” stated Barnes.
Watermark Retirement Communities has owned and operated successful, innovative senior housing communities for more than 20 years. According to Barnes, Watermark is committed to creating extraordinary communities where people thrive and a culture where everyone is encouraged to express their creativity, passion and inner child – to express their true selves. As a result, Barnes says, Watermark communities are full of spirit, character, compassion and adventure.
