LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT CHAPTER You can thrive at every age when you live with easy access to the people and pursuits you enjoy. “I’m a people person, I enjoy meeting people and I’ve made a lot of new friends here … and the big thing right now is we have several groups that are playing euchre. And we can’t wait to play euchre.” – Barb Higgins, resident of Legacy at Willow Pond

MEET BARB HIGGINS, A PEOPLE PERSON WHO CHOOSES TO THRIVE, RAIN OR SHINE. You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Barb Higgins on Tuesday, February 12, 2019. To read the full, unedited transcript, please click here.)

Rochester native Barb Higgins taught elementary school, ran the drapery department at JCPenney and packed for a moving company during her working years. Together with Bradford, her husband of 51 years, she raised a loving family. When Bradford passed away, Barb found herself suddenly alone with a big house for which to care. Last spring, she decided to turn the page and start her next exciting chapter at Legacy at Willow Pond. Now, when she isn’t dining with new friends or entertaining old friends, she’s playing euchre, taking classes and hopping the community’s convenient bus to church or Wegmans. She and her cat Snoopy enjoy watching the birds from their apartment windows and can’t wait to plant their patio garden this spring.

IS RETIREMENT COMMUNITY LIVING IN THE CARDS FOR YOU? In life as in euchre, you can’t control the cards you’re dealt, but you can still have fun playing out every hand if you so choose. The right retirement community makes it easy, and it’s never too early to explore your options. Choose the right attitude and start exploring today. "I treated it as a chapter. It’s a whole new chapter in my life. And I was willing to do this because one, the children are going to be happy, they knew I was coming someplace where they knew I’m happy already even before I moved in and they knew that I’m safe here. They knew that there were a lot of activities and they said, ‘Mom, I think this is the place for you.’ And I thought about it and I thought, ‘You know, you’re right.’" – Barb Higgins

NOT SURE WHETHER IT’S FOR YOU? ASK. While working for a local moving company, Barb packed up lots of people who were relocating to various Legacy communities around Rochester. Now that she lives at one of them herself, she has great advice to share. If you aren’t sure where to start looking, look no further than our next Discovery Luncheon and meet Barb in person. "Come in and investigate some of these places, talk to the residents, talk to the people in charge of the establishment if you want to call it that, really talk to some of the people who moved in, they are very ready to tell you the pros and cons about moving." – Barb Higgins IT’S ALL ABOUT INDEPENDENCE Barb recently gave her car to her grandson, who had more use for it than she did. Between Legacy’s transportation service and generous friends, she always gets wherever she wants to go, whether its church meetings, shopping at Walmart or fun outings planned for residents’ enjoyment. Between all of Legacy’s convenient services and amenities, you can stay as independent as you want to be. "If you like to walk, they put in a walk from Legacy to Wegmans so on a nice day you can walk there, which I have done." – Barb Higgins
