The Neighborhood Around
The Fountains at Millbrook

HUDSON VALLEY BEAUTY, SMALL-TOWN CHARM

Rolling hills, local flavor, and plenty to explore.

Millbrook is a quaint destination for New Yorkers to visit on weekends when they’re looking to treat themselves and unwind. Less than 90 minutes from Manhattan, it’s an easy destination to get to either by car or the Metro North Railway. Can you blame them? What’s not to love about this friendly, small town?

Beyond its charm, Millbrook is steeped in history. The grounds of The Fountains at Millbrook were once part of the Greer School. Originally founded in 1906 as Hope Farm, the grounds included a home and school for disadvantaged children. Renamed Greer School in the late 1930s, it played a vital role in shaping the local community for decades. Many of the original buildings remain, including McAlister House, which once served as the school’s home economics building and later as a guest house.

The History

In the years before the American Revolution, two nearby settlements — Mechanic and Hart’s Village — were established within the confines of what is now Millbrook.

In 1869, the Dutchess and Columbia Railroad ended their route at a stop called Millbrook, named after an adjacent farm. It was not until 1895 that Millbrook was incorporated as a village.
