Style Magazine recently profiled Chef Anthony Vo, Executive Chef at Sonrisa Senior Living in Roseville. This inspiring feature highlights his remarkable journey, deep passion for food, and commitment to reimagining senior dining.
For nearly a decade, Chef Vo has been transforming mealtimes into flavorful, memorable experiences. His approach breaks away from traditional retirement community fare, blending fine dining techniques with heartfelt care. “A lot of people don’t see senior living chefs as ‘real’ chefs,” he shared. “This was my chance to prove them wrong.”
Growing up, Chef Vo faced significant challenges, including time spent in foster care and periods of instability. It was cooking alongside his grandmother that became an anchor. He credits her with shaping his values and igniting a love of food that never faded. “She had 18 children, so the kitchen was always bustling,” he recalled.
After graduating from San Juan High School’s culinary program, he earned a scholarship to Johnson & Wales University. But when his grandmother was diagnosed with dementia, he chose to stay close to her rather than pursue fine dining full time. That decision eventually led him to senior living, where he began as a server and quickly rose to become an executive chef by age 21.
In 2024, Chef Vo appeared as a contestant on “Hell’s Kitchen,” competing under the mentorship of Gordon Ramsay. Though he didn’t take the top prize, he described the experience as a personal victory. “My main reason for doing the show wasn’t to win — it was about impact and validation,” he said.
His vision for senior dining is rooted in both culinary excellence and a positive kitchen culture. “The perk is the connections I get to make and the impact I have on my seniors’ lives and my team’s,” he shared. “A lot of chefs work in negative kitchen environments. I let my team create and shine because it’s not just about me.”
Outside of Sonrisa, Chef Vo is equally committed to giving back. He has founded three nonprofits with the help of close friends, focused on causes such as mental health awareness for chefs and supporting foster youth. From luggage and school supply drives to monthly fine dining pop-ups in Sacramento, his work reflects a desire to uplift others.
And despite his busy schedule, he still finds time for his favorite ways to unwind, including watching cooking shows, collecting Pokémon memorabilia, and revisiting the world of Harry Potter.
“I’m not in this for rewards or the limelight,” Chef Vo said. “I’m just staying true to who my grandma raised and what she taught me.”
