As we honor and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, we’re reminded that it’s never too late to live authentically, love openly, and stand proudly beside those doing the same. At Watermark Retirement Communities®, we're proud to foster environments where everyone feels seen, heard, and celebrated every single day of the year.

This year, 25 Watermark communities were recognized as SAGECare Platinum Credentialed Providers. Watermark’s partnership with SAGECare provides associates with specialized training designed to help improve aging services and better serve LGBTQ+ older adults, their loved ones, associates, and guests.

Michaela, the sales director at a Watermark community in New York, shared how inclusive programming has made a positive impact that extends beyond the community. In an interview with WHAM, Michaela explained how teaching residents about the meaning of Pride and inclusion can make them feel included as well.

"I think there's something to say about the generational experiences, you know, seniors do sometimes feel left out or not knowing of certain things," she said. "To understand their grandkids better and, you know, be a supportive ally, just learning in this room what that means, and then being able to showcase it in their own families, I think that's a huge stride forward."

For Watermark residents June and Arnold, participating in Pride activities has brought them closer to LGBTQ+ family members. When their daughter and her wife joined them for last year’s parade, Arnold proudly displayed a sign that read, “I love my daughter and her wife,” as fellow attendees cheered them on.

With nearly 60% of LGBTQ+ older adults reporting feeling a lack of companionship and more than 50% feeling isolated from others, visual expressions of support and solidarity create spaces where everyone feels safe to be their authentic selves.

Andrés, who bravely came out in his fifties, later found himself feeling forced back into the shadows when he began exploring senior living communities. In our article, “Filled With Pride,” Andrés opened up about his coming out journey, sharing how his community’s inclusive programs inspired him to embrace his true self. Joining more than 20,000 people in a vibrant celebration of love and acceptance, Andrés walked in the 2024 Rochester Pride Parade holding a profound message: “It’s Never Too Late to Be You.”

No matter your age or background, you have the power to make a difference. Being an ally transforms support into action, helping to create safer, more inclusive spaces where everyone feels seen, respected, and valued.
