Adults age 65 and over suffer the greatest number of falls each year. Many falls are preventable and the skilled rehab professionals at our Skilling Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at The Watermark at East Hill have several simple tips that can help you stay safe and avoid falling. Causes of Falls According to The Centers for Disease Control, falling just one time doubles your chances of falling again. There are many different risk factors that contribute to falling, including lower body weakness, difficulty with walking and balance, vision problems, vitamin D deficiency and use of certain medicines. Dangers and hazards that can lead to falling at home include loose throw rugs that may cause you to trip, broken or uneven steps, slippery surfaces (particularly in the bathroom), poor lighting and clutter left on the floor. Ice and snow on outdoor walkways can also be treacherous and hard to navigate.

How to Prevent Falls Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider about your medicines and other risk factors that could make you more prone to falls. See an eye doctor at least once a year to make sure your prescription is still accurate and effective. Strength and balance exercise such as Tai Chi, yoga, light weightlifting and swimming can all help improve your balance, increase flexibility and keep your muscles and bones strong.  Our Vitality Fitness Center offers a heated indoor pool with a variety of aquatic classes, a wide array of fitness and wellness classes, state-of-the-art fitness equipment and personal trainers who can help you design a fitness program tailored to meet your specific needs and goals for optimal wellness. There are easy steps you can take to make your home safer as well:
  • Remove loose rugs, clutter, cords and other objects from the floor that could cause you to trip.
  • Always make sure there is adequate lighting in hallways, stairs, and outdoor walkways.
  • Attach sturdy handrails on both sides of all stairways.
  • Move items you can't reach to lower shelves and cabinets.
  • Install handrails in the bathtub and near the toilet.
  • Use a nonslip rubber mat in the shower or tub.
  • Be careful and move slowly when you stand up or sit down. Being more aware of how you move can help you avert falls.
