Welcome to Upper Marlboro

Small-town life with a big city next door.

There are few places in America quite like Upper Marlboro. With major metropolitan centers like Washington, D.C., Annapolis, Maryland, and Arlington, Virginia, all within an hour’s drive, this small, peaceful town is rich in eclectic goings-on and historical traditions. It’s the ideal destination for a modern, fully accommodating senior living center. It’s the kind of place that feels safe, and welcoming. Two good features for a vibrant retirement community.

The quaint town of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, is a quiet, sleepy, historical community in Prince George's County located only 20 miles from Washington, D.C. The town’s founder was an ancestor of Winston Churchill for whom the town was named in the late 17th century. It’s one of the oldest surviving colonial towns in Maryland, but offers hiking, nature walks, a wildlife preserve, and a host of local activities unique to the quiet township. Though you may have to travel a few minutes for “spicier” attractions, the town certainly has a unique character, firmly rooted in local history.

About Upper Marlboro

The original charter for Upper Marlboro dates back to 1706. The town got its name from Winston Churchill's ancestor, the First Duke of Marlborough. Upper Marlboro was founded on land that belonged to several prominent estates, including Darnall’s Chance. It was originally a port town, playing a significant role in selling and shipping tobacco.

The older section of Upper Marlboro, made up of 100 acres, is renowned for its fine examples of historic buildings and residences. It was recently declared a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, you can take a walk back in time to learn more about Upper Marlboro’s history and visit some of the buildings that were converted into historical museums and exhibits.
