The Watermark at Vistawilla in Winter Springs, Florida, was recently featured in The Sanford Herald for receiving the 2024 Watermark for Kids award. This award celebrates the community’s incredible efforts to empower children and teens in need. Chosen from among 40 Watermark Retirement Communities nationwide, Vistawilla stood out for its consistent fundraising and creative community involvement.
This recognition highlights the community’s deep commitment to Watermark for Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating barriers and providing life-enriching opportunities for youth aged 6 to 22. Since 2007, Watermark for Kids has awarded more than $1.2 million to children across the country.
Purse Wars and Purpose-Driven Fundraising
In 2024, The Watermark at Vistawilla hosted multiple fundraising events, but one event stood above the rest: Purse Wars. This unique and engaging race-style auction featured vendor-donated designer handbags. Hosted in February, the event raised an impressive $1,760, thanks to ticket sales, entry fees, and generous community support.
Throughout the year, the community also held monthly fundraisers, including a resident-favorite chili cookoff in November, rallying both associates and families to support the mission.
“We’re honored to support Watermark for Kids and the incredible work it is doing in our local communities,” said Executive Director David Schupack. “This would not be possible without the hard work of our associates and the unwavering support from residents and families. We plan to continue these efforts in 2025 and beyond and look forward to sponsoring a Watermark Kid soon.”
A Shared Mission of Empowerment
Watermark for Kids was founded by David Barnes, former president of Watermark Retirement Communities, and works closely with local communities, such as The Watermark at Vistawilla, to provide children with tools for success. The organization funds everything from school supplies and tuition assistance to adaptive medical equipment and therapy, based on the belief that every child deserves access to opportunities, regardless of their background.
As The Watermark at Vistawilla continues its fundraising and outreach, the community sets a shining example of what it means to give back, lead with compassion, and build a brighter future — one child at a time.
