Every Saturday, a dedicated group of residents at The Fountains at La Cholla comes together with a shared mission — to transform discarded plastic bags into something meaningful for those in need.
Residents collect plastic bags to flatten, cut into strips, and tie together to make “plarn,” or plastic yarn. Next, they crochet the plarn into durable sleeping mats for our unsheltered neighbors. These mats provide a barrier from the ground and something more. They help the body retain heat while sleeping, which offers a bit more comfort and dignity to people experiencing homelessness.
What started as a simple idea has grown into a weekly act of compassion. It’s a great way to give back, reduce waste, and connect with others. Thank you to all the kind and caring residents who keep showing up to make a difference. When the greater community needs help, our own community rises to the occasion.
